Introducing the 2011 Marching Music Academy
The Boston Crusaders members and staff will be featured artists and clinicians at the Marching Music Academy this summer, June 24 and 25 (see below for more details)

Preparations for the Marching Music Academy begin with a webinar Thursday, April 28, 7:30 p.m. ET -- Join Jay Kennedy and DCI's John Phillips, Michael Cesario, and Gary Markham for an overview of the Marching Music Academy at Music Education Week as they share their experience in programming and design and the updates on the standards and practices. They will also give an overview of the Boston Crusaders' involvement and answer questions about the Marching Music Academy. This webinar is free, but space is limited. Register.

9:00 – 10:15 a.m. Welcome to the Marching Music Academy
10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Design for Success; Successful Design

Members of the Boston Crusaders' design staff discuss approaches to programming and design from both creative and judging perspectives and considerations. The session is designed to assist marching ensembles in the development of their creative vision and discuss ways to bring ideas to life on the marching stage. Topics will encompass theme vs. music – which comes first?; choosing music; visual concept and design; form and pacing; musical and visual performance considerations; and costumes and props. Time permitting, participants may present their programming ideas for feedback from the panel.

Boston Crusaders’ music arrangers and music caption heads present ways to help marching music ensembles maximize their potential. The session will focus on successful approaches to construction and arranging, collaborative approaches necessary in creating a successful blending of writing for winds, writing for percussion and front ensemble instruments, performance considerations, and incorporating generation of effect in the music design process.

8:30 – 9:00 a.m. Introducing the Marching Music Standards

The Standards for Marching Music include Music, Visual, and Health and Safety are intended to help guide marching music ensembles of all levels and categories in providing a supportive and enriching curricular experience. This overview session will help participants connect the learning throughout the sessions to their own context regardless of whether they are novice or veteran music educators.

10:00 – 11:00 a.m. Marching Techniques: The Road to Success

Visual Caption Head and members of the Boston Crusaders will present a manual for successful marching training that focus on style and technique.

1:30 – 2:30 p.m. Getting Started: The Importance of Fundamentals

Join the Boston Crusaders in section rehearsal to discover the best in fundamental training for winds, percussion and marching. Students will demonstrate an array of techniques and strategies for developing endurance, flexibility and musical expression. Clinicians: members of the Boston Crusaders

2:30 – 3:30 p.m. Connections

Discover the secrets to achieving better balance and precision in your ensemble. The Crusaders will demonstrate the techniques they employ in attaining a total musical ensemble. Visual ensemble technique strategies will also be presented.

3:30 – 5:00 p.m. Putting It All together

Experience the full effect of the corps in a dress rehearsal run through performance. Bonus: learn how these marching music ensembles are judged and try your hand at judging.

7:00 p.m. DCI Salutes America Event

Marching Music Academy attendees conclude their drum corps experience at DCI Salutes America – a competitive marching music event featuring some of the world’s most elite drum corps featuring the Boston Crusaders, Madison Scouts, Crossmen, Spirit of Atlanta, and more, in cluding the debut of the winning composition of the "Best American Cadence" Contest, run by the Boston Crusaders and Mapex Percussion. During the show, interested Academy participants will use DCI score sheets to rank and rate the performances of the performing corps. At the close of the show, participants will have an opportunity to compare their findings to the judging panel results and ask the judges what they thought about the performances. Registration in the Marching Music Academy includes an admission ticket for the event and transportation to the event.
