January Recap
2011 is off to a great start as the Boston Crusaders held two camps this past January.  “Since we didn’t start until December, we wanted to make sure we were on track for our usual seven-camp season,” said Executive Director Tom Spataro. “Squeezing two into January gets us back on track for the rest of the winter and spring."  Spataro continued, "I like having camps this frequently; I wish it was a little more ‘back-in-the-day’ drum corps where we could see each other every weekend, but that’s not the case.  Our kids are so involved in other school activities, it probably wouldn’t work out, but it would sure be great to see each other more often!”

By the end of January, the Crusaders hornline had five minutes of show music under their fingers, in addition to another three to five minutes of encore material.  “We’ve been building a book of standard repertoire over the last few years,” said Brass Caption Head Chad Pence.  “This gives our performers a chance to work on literature outside of the 10 minute field show.  Each year, we keep the previous year’s repertoire, and add a new song to the list.  We think our fans will be pleased with this year’s additions—in fact, we’ll be able to do a whole second show!”

Although the winter has been uncharacteristically cold, the corps was able to have an ensemble block outside Sunday afternoon of the last camp, where they played through minutes 2-4 of this year’s production under the direction of Chad Pence and Ellis Hampton.  Bruno Zuccala, standing in for Tom Spataro at the second January camp, pushed for an outdoor ensemble block.  “We have this great weather—why wouldn’t we take the opportunity to hear the show outdoors where it’s going to be all summer?”  Zuccala continued, “It’s great to watch Chad and Ellis teach these kids—we’ve got quite the team assembled for this upcoming season.  The atmosphere at camp is great!”

The February Camp is just around the corner.  Program Coordinator Jay Kennedy has promised this year’s ballad will be delivered in time for the February Camp, leaving only a few more minutes of show to be completed.
