The 8th decade of Crusaders drum corps is well under way, and the Boston Crusaders
have completed another year of successful Round One auditions in Massachusetts Florida, and Texas. With national interest at an all time high, video audition submissions from around the country and the globe saw a dramatic increase for 2011. These included submissions from Europe and Asia, as well as continental locations from the Pacific Northwest to Canada and even to Florida candidates who had college football games during camp weekend. "With the current state of technology and computing, video auditions have become a cost- and time-effective way for candidates to introduce themselves to our organization," said Executive Director Tom Spataro.
The December camp re-introduced caption heads Chad Pence (brass) and Ellis Hampton (percussion), both former Crusaders technicians, to their respective captions.
"We make sure to achieve a good balance between evaluating the candidates and giving them a 'full camp' experience at our first camp," said Pence. "We go beyond the gauntlet of individual auditions and dig into the music book as much as possible."
In addition to introducing the technique handbook for the year, the auditioning hornline was able to play through two encore pieces, as well as the opening strains of the corps' 2011 production. "This is probably the most amount of music we've played through opening weekend," commented third-year Crusaders Drum Major Thompson Vou.
Brass and Percussion auditions will continue at Lakewood Ranch January 7-9.
If you were unable to attend any of the Round 1 auditions, there are still a few openings available in the corps. Fill out an application now.
