Dec Camp Wrap
The month of December is almost over, and with it, the corps 2010 audition process.  Over 200 people returned to Lakewood Ranch this past weekend for Round Two of auditions.  Friday was a bit hectic as the beginnings of a historic storm threw the mid-atlantic states into chaos.  "We had to scramble a bit to get the word out to everyone that camp was still in session, as The Cadets and Jersey Surf [among others] wisely canceled their camps.  Fortunately at the time, the weather was passing just north of Florida and had not yet reached Boston--the storm looked like it would have less effect on our two main sources of students and staff, so we decided to soldier on," stated Executive Director Tom Spataro.

Tour Director Suzanne Ferrell-Locke commented on the flight situation, "Every Friday is busy as we shuttle members and staff from the airport to the school.  We try to be prepared for the inevitable flight delays.  This weekend saw a few more than usual, but we were able to get just about everyone in before midnight, and only had one member who had to cancel out on camp completely.  He'll be back in January though!"

Sunday's departures were mildly affected by the cancellations from Saturday's snowstorm, but in true drum corps fashion, several local families opened their doors to anyone who ended up stranded at the airport Sunday.

Camp itself went very smoothly as both the Crusaders and Lakewood Ranch continue to refine their relationship.  The corps was awakened a few minutes early Saturday for an impromptu basketball practice in the gym, but most coaches don't expect to find 200 sleeping bodies in their gym on a random Saturday.  We're not sure who was more surprised!

Aside from intermittent torrential rains on Friday, the weather was very pleasant, if not a little colder than usual.  In the midst of the audition process, the hornline was able to work through five and a half minutes of music, and Sunday saw a very productive ensemble block in the afternoon.  A terrific way to end an excellent camp.  January approaches…
